Martin Jay Sadoff
February 17, 1947 – December 11, 2024
Marty was born in Bronx, NY and moved to Buffalo at age 7 with his family. The eldest of 3 boys, he enjoyed movies, hockey, and baseball which would all greatly influence his later career. He attended Buffalo Public School #66, and later graduated from Bennet High School in 1964. He attended the University of Buffalo film school, and went on to graduate with a Film Degree from NYU. After spending time in Toronto, he moved to Los Angeles in 1977 to pursue a career in the entertainment industry. His areas of expertise were editing and special effects, which eventually led to a passion for all things 3D related. He was a pioneer in the field, which led to his involvement in the Friday the 13th franchise. Not only did he bring Jason to life through 3D effects, he also is credited for originating the iconic goalie mask, forever to be known as the “Jason Mask” in pop culture history. Some of Marty’s other credits include Director of The Last of the Gladiators, a film about the life of stunt performer Evil Knievel and Visual Effects Supervisor for Miracle Mile, a romantic thriller starring Anthony Edwards.
He was an animal lover, and his horse, dogs, and cats were focal points in his life. Many people have been regaled with tales of Pongo the Dalmatian over the years, as well as stories of his dude ranch adventures.
Marty was preceded in death by his parents David and Ruth Sadoff; survived by his brothers, Stephen (Kathleen) Sadoff and Kenneth Sadoff; his niece, Jessica Sadoff, and nephew, André Sadoff. A Celebration of Life will be held at a later date. Share condolences at mesnekoff.com
