Max Sloan
December 8, 1947 – March 10, 2025
Max Sloan was born Max Shlomovitz in a displaced persons camp in Germany on December 8, 1947 to Sol and Gertrude. Holocaust survivors, they lived in the displaced persons camp waiting to start a new life somewhere with their daughter Rose, and Max. The chance came in 1949 when they were sponsored by Sol’s aunt and uncle in Buffalo New York. They arrived in Buffalo and started a new life.
In 1955 the Sloan family started a shop on William street on Buffalo’s East side. They lived in the back and the shop was in the front. Max’s formative years were spent helping his parents in the shop, going fishing with his dad, and having a great time exploring and enjoying 1950s Buffalo.
Max attended Bennett High School, and then the University at Buffalo where he became a special education teacher. He loved teaching, often being placed in classrooms with troubled kids. He recognized that all those kids needed were love and he worked hard to help them find a love for learning and life. But he had a calling to return to work with his parents at Sloan’s Antiques. He loved talking with people who wanted to sell antiques, and he loved talking with people who wanted to buy antiques, and he loved talking with people who just came to look.
In 1971 he married Elizabeth Shevat. Their life was filled with spending time with friends, concerts, and eventually travel. Together they travelled the world. Upon settling back in Buffalo they started a family and had Jessica and Joshua.
Max loved his life. Filled with devotion to family and friends, he worked hard building the business. He loved going fishing with his dad and children and friends. He loved listening to music. He loved sitting in his backyard and listening to the birds.
Max touched everyone he met. With his stories, jokes, advice, and an innate caring about people. He made every effort to help everyone that he could. He left us too soon, he had more love to give. After a short illness, Max passed away on March 10, 2025 surrounded by his family.
Max will be missed by his family, friends, and the Buffalo community.
